Have You Found Your Target Market?

By

Missy Tincher

I know I normally write about quality blog content and leveraging that content, but today I decided to write about something a little bit different since it may help you if you're just starting your business (the subject is also very important to content marketing, too).

When you started your small business, your main goal was to make your business successful, right? I know that the question has an obvious answer, but I have seen some business owners not give enough time to identify who their target market is before they jumped in and just started marketing their business. Doing this, your marketing efforts could go wasted and you may not see any sales. So I am going to talk about a few basic reasons why you should seriously think about where your customers are and why it is so important to build up relationships with them.

"Finding" Your Target Market

Once you have determined who your target market is, you can concentrate on where you can find them and how to interact with them in order for you to spread your message about your business. For example, if you are a health coach for women, you would not want to market your services and products to an audience made up of men. That just would not work. You need to do your research and visit places where your customers hang out. Some of the places you could look are:

• Social Media Networking- when searching on who to connect with, make sure it's your target market. For example: A health coach for women would search for "healthy women," "health and women," just "women," etc. Yes, it's good to get a lot of friends and followers on your social media accounts, but if they are not potential customers, why do you want to bother marketing to them?

• Facebook and LinkedIn Groups- When you belong to these groups that consist of your target market, you have a better chance of being able to relate to them one on one and building up that trust that is so needed in order to make a sale. This is especially a good idea if you have other people on your social media accounts that are not potential customers (ex. Family and friends).

• Forums and Membership Sites- Google your target market (ex. healthy women) and you'll be able to find these types of venues that are specifically targeted to your prospective customers. Review the rules, etc., and decide if you'd be a good fit and then join. Just don't forget to interact with the members once you do join!

• Local Networking Events- Keep up with your local news to see when live events would be taking place that your target market may be interested in. Then show up and start building those relationships (don't forget your business cards and pen).

There are many other places you could find your target market at, but the above suggestions should get your started.

You need to go out there and search for your potential customers... they will not be looking for you. The more you get to know who they are and start building relationships with them, the more chances you have of them purchasing from you AND coming back to you for more in the future. PLUS, there is always the chance they will spread the word about you to others and guess what? Then there could be more sales. Doesn't that sound good to you?
