A Not So Small RequestByRaymond D. Matkowsky
I want to start the New Year with a request. This website is slightly more than twenty years old. I have tried to stay away from controversial topics knowing full well that no matter what the topic is someone will disagree with a point of view. When it comes to climate change and what to do about it, there are many divergent opinions. Many of these opinions are based on questionable facts. However, it is imperative we get this right.
Business Leaders Are More Aware Than The Public
The news media tends to focus on the positive and many times ignore the negative. As Industrialists, business leaders, and scientists many of us are aware of facts that the general public is not. Please bring out these facts good or bad!
Climate change is ongoing. It is slow but so is research. I would venture to say that most people do not realize that historically it is about 30 years between the formation of an idea and a viable consumer product. With climate change we do not have time to waste. Thirty years maybe too long to wait.
Present Ideas Are Failing
As we Americans say, initial climate programs are “going south.” Wind turbines, even in the windy North Sea is proving unviable, solar collectors cannot generate enough power with the land available, with the exception of a few European countries, people don’t want to buy EVs, some nations do not want to give up or their needs for coal reserves.
I also have to question the competency of some people running these programs. I have heard a number of claims that makes me shudder. You could be a top notch scientist but yet a poor businessperson.
As with EVs, if only a few will buy them, they will not make a dent into the climate problem.
Many Voices Are Needed
This site had 91,000+ visitors in 2022. To some that may be a large amount, but it is actually a small platform. What is needed is many times that size. Therefore, my request is that whatever your opinion is you articulated and support your opinion with facts. My hope is that we come to some consensus on how best to approach the problem and not waste thirty years following an unviable scheme.
Remember, that you don’t change a person’s mind. They change their own mind. They do this by reevaluating old facts as they apply to present conditions, new facts that had come to light, new technologies, and financial considerations. Present facts not arguments.
Thank you.
